How to Care for Carpet
Carpet Care
Carpeting is really easy to care for and a simple, regular care plan will help you maintain the beautiful appearance of your carpeting for many years to come. Follow this basic care that applies to all carpets and area rugs.
Instant Removal of spills to prevent spots and stains (see below).
Daily light vacuuming of heavy traffic areas to pick up surface dirt and lint.
Weekly thorough vacuuming with a properly adjusted vacuum cleaner to get out the embedded dirt that can cause premature wear.
Professional carpet cleaning every 1-3 years depending on the conditions, for best appearance and longest life from carpeting and area rugs. Hot Water Steam Extraction that removes soil, spill residues, etc. (ie. source removal) is the recommended method for this type of intermittent carpet maintenance.
Area Carpet Life and appearance can be extended by turning them around once in a while, changing the parts that get walked on the most, evening out wear.
Important:
Follow these steps before proceeding to the chart of stains and methods of removal.
- On any fresh stain, remove all excess moisture with paper tissues by Blotting. Do not rub the stained area, since this spreads the stain.
- On any dried stain, when the surface of the stain is hard and crusted, carefully break it up and remove loose material by vacuuming.
- With stains that are not identifiable, try “no bleach” detergent and water first, then other recommended cleaning agents.
- For best results, spot clean as soon as stain is noticed.
The pH scale in chemistry is used to measure acidity or alkalinity. The scale runs from 1 to 14, 7 being neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic, anything above alkaline. Since most soils are acidic, cleaning solutions tend to be alkaline. The idea is that when the two react, the cleaned area is left pH neutral. The same principle is used in hair shampoos.
Crush Marks in Carpeting can be reduced by placing plastic caps under the legs of furniture, spreading out the weight. When crushing does occur, moisten the area with warm water and let it sit. Then brush the carpet pile back and forth with a nylon brush to help it stand straight.
