General use cleaners have their limitations when trying to get out those tough stain and buildups. Below are some fairly quick and easy solutions using household products to help deal keep your bathroom and home, clean and germ free. Remember to use personal protective equipment as necessary to keep yourself safe including rubber gloves, N95 masks and safety glasses.
Bathtub Rust: to remove rust stains from a bathtub mix cream of tartar and peroxide to form a paste. Mix in 3 drops of ammonia. Apply to the stain and let it sit for 2 hours. Rinse and scrub lightly to remove the stain.
Yellow Bathtub: a bathtub that has gradually taken on a yellow hue can be remedied with the following procedure. Mix a few drops of turpentine with salt and scrub the tub with a sponge. The salt provides grit while the turpentine works to dissolve the stain. Make sure that the area is well ventilated. After the tub has been restored maintain it with monthly cleaning with a solution of white vinegar and water.
Shower Head Buildup: shower heads typically buildup with mineral deposits and can come to constrict proper water flow. Remove the shower head and boil in a small pan in a mixture of 3/4 cup of white vinegar and 4 cups of water. The vinegar will act to dissolve the mineral building allowing your shower head to flow nice and free.
Shower Doors: remove the build up of soap scum on glass shower doors by wiping with a sponge with vinegar. To keep shower doors looking good do this weekly.
Faucet Mineral Deposits: saturate a paper towel with white vinegar and wrap around the faucet, making sure to cover all the deposits. Let sit for 1/2 hour. Scrub lightly and rinse. Repeat the process if necessary.
Faucet Maintenance: keep faucets clean and shiny by wiping with rubbing alcohol and paper towels. Use a spray bottle and give a quick spray and wipe every few days.
Toilet Bowl: keep your toilet from becoming stained with preventative care. Once a week put 2 cups of white vinegar into the bowl and let sit for one hour. Brush clean and flush. This also works well on toilet bowl rings but in this case let it sit over night.
Preventing Buildup on Tiles: first, give tiles a thorough clean and let completely dry including the grout. Coat the tiles and grout with car wax. Let wax sit and then buff to a shine. This will seal the pores in the tiles and prevent stains from getting into the tiles. The tiles will also repel water and soap scum. Do once or twice a year.
